The counseling department at Laurel has a lot to offer students and families.

Our school counselor is Mrs. Smith She can assist with short-term individual and group counseling.

What she can assist with:

  • Academic needs

  • Peer relationships 

  • Social skills

  • Managing emotions and coping skills 

  • Goal setting 

  • Locating community resources for families 

  • And much more

Meet Your School Counselor!

Hey JoCo families!  My name is Lonna Smith and I've been around here for quite awhile now.  Fact is, a lot of you were probably my students when you were in school!  I can't say how long I've been a school counselor because it's longer than how old I tell people that I am.  It's been a minute, though!  I just can't seem to want to retire!  I love my job and all the students I work with!  I honestly can't think of anything I'd rather be doing.  

I received a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with a certification in Kindergarten and a Master's of Education degree in Elementary and Secondary School Counseling back before the Internet was invented and everyone had a computer.  I've spent the majority of my career at JCMS as the school counselor except for the 5 years I worked in Putnam County and the last 3 years when I served JCMS students as their College and Career Counselor.  

Although it is bittersweet to leave behind the young teens that have become my life, I am looking forward to getting to know and work with the parents and students in the Laurel community this year.  Let's all make this year great!
